Transport Secretary Sets Out Five Key Priorities for Transformational Overhaul
Newly appointed Transport Secretary, Louise Haigh, has promised to deliver the most significant overhaul to transport in a generation, outlining five strategic priorities that will drive the Department for Transport (DfT) into a new era. The ambitious plan is underscored by the department’s new motto: “Move fast and fix things.”
Immediate Action on Key Priorities
On her first day, Haigh convened with officials to kickstart reforms across the department. The focus areas include rail reform, bus power devolution, nationwide infrastructure enhancement, and long-term road maintenance support for local authorities.
Addressing DfT staff on Monday, 8 July 2024, Haigh detailed her five strategic priorities:
- Rail Reform and Performance Improvement: Aiming to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the railways.
- Bus Services Improvement: Efforts to grow bus usage and improve services across the country.
- Infrastructure Transformation: Ensuring infrastructure developments promote social mobility and tackle regional inequality.
- Greener Transport: Committing to eco-friendly transport solutions.
- Integrated Transport Networks: Better integration across different transport modes.
Engagement with Key Partners
In her proactive approach, the Transport Secretary’s first official visit will focus on improving bus services nationwide. Haigh will engage with mayors and devolved leaders, who are crucial to delivering these improvements.
A Vision for Transport-Driven Government Missions
Haigh emphasised the department’s centrality to the government’s broader missions, including economic growth, net-zero targets, and enhanced safety for women and girls. She highlighted the need to consider infrastructure and services as intertwined elements in every decision.
The newly appointed Rail Minister, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill CBE, brings extensive experience to support these goals. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced new ministerial appointments to the department:
- Lilian Greenwood MP as Future of Roads Minister
- Simon Lightwood MP as Local Transport Minister
- Mike Kane MP as Aviation, Maritime, and Security Minister
